Extracorporeal Shockwave Biliary Lithotripsy

Abstract
Since extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy in urinary tract stone has been proved successful, it leads to extend the technology to the treatment of gallstones.
We tried clinical application of shock wave treatment in 10 volunteers with gallstones after carefully designed in vitro experimental studies.
In 6 patients with radiolucent stone (s) and good function of gallbladder, 3 successful treatments and 1 partial fragmentation of gallstones were obtained using EDAP LTO1 lithotripter. Two of these 6 patients did not appear to follow up.
In 4 patients with radio paque stone(s) or poor function of gallbladder, the results of treatment were not satisfactory.
No evidence of serious complication or side effect of shock wave treatment was observed in all patients.
With above results, we concluded that biliary lithotripsy with extracorporeal shock wave will be a good treatment method if applied in selected cases.
